🌿 Natural Defenders: Plants That Repel Insects and Critters

Keeping your garden healthy in Mid-Michigan isn’t just about planting the right vegetables—it’s about protecting them too. Instead of turning to chemical pesticides, many gardeners are rediscovering the power of natural plant defenders. These are plants that not only beautify your garden but also help repel unwanted pests like mosquitoes, rabbits, and aphids.

At Houghton Jones Neighborhood Association, we’re excited to help you grow smarter and greener. Here’s your guide to natural pest-fighting plants that thrive right here in our region.

🪰 1. Basil – The Bug-Blocking Herb

Repels: Flies, mosquitoes, aphids
How to Use: Plant basil near tomatoes and peppers to keep pests at bay. You can also crush fresh basil leaves and rub them on your skin as a natural bug repellent.
Bonus: Fresh basil for your summer recipes!

🐰 2. Marigolds – The Critter Control Champs

Repels: Nematodes, aphids, rabbits, and deer
How to Use: Line the perimeter of your vegetable garden with marigolds. Their strong scent masks the smell of veggies and confuses pests.
Bonus: Adds bright color and cheer to any garden space.

🦟 3. Lavender – Nature’s Perfume with a Punch

Repels: Moths, fleas, flies, mosquitoes
How to Use: Plant it near entryways, garden beds, or patio areas. You can also dry it and place it in sachets inside your home.
Bonus: Its calming scent reduces stress—for you, not the bugs!

🐛 4. Mint – The Multipurpose Menace to Pests

Repels: Ants, mosquitoes, cabbage moths, fleas
How to Use: Best planted in containers (it spreads fast!). Place containers around your garden’s edge.
Bonus: Use it in drinks, teas, and desserts.

🦗 5. Chives – The Underrated Onion Ally

Repels: Japanese beetles, aphids, carrot rust flies
How to Use: Plant near roses, carrots, and tomatoes.
Bonus: Snip the leaves to use in your cooking for a mild onion flavor.

🐿️ 6. Garlic – For More Than Just Flavor

Repels: Aphids, slugs, beetles, rabbits
How to Use: Interplant with vegetables. You can also make a garlic spray by blending garlic cloves with water and spraying it on leaves.
Bonus: Garlic helps boost your immune system too!

🦋 7. Nasturtiums – Trap and Deter

Repels: Aphids, whiteflies, squash bugs
How to Use: Plant as a border around your squash, cucumbers, and beans. Aphids will be attracted to nasturtiums instead of your main crops.
Bonus: Both the flowers and leaves are edible and peppery!

🌱 Tips to Maximize Pest Control Naturally:

  • Mix and Match: Plant a variety of pest-repelling plants for layered protection.

  • Rotate Your Crops: Don’t plant the same crops in the same spot each year.

  • Healthy Soil = Healthy Plants: Weak plants attract pests. Focus on composting and mulching regularly.

  • Invite Beneficial Insects: Ladybugs, praying mantises, and bees are your allies in pest control.
